Parking Fines at Lee Valley

I’m aware there have been a spate of Parking Fines issued over recent slalom event weekends at Lee Valley.  Gemini, the parking company, were over-zealous and their communication and customer service has been poor.  I have shared feedback with the LVWWC management about the reputational damage, cost and inconvenience this causes.  They are dealing directly with Gemini to prevent a re-occurrence, reviewing access to overflow parking during events, and working hard to clear PCNs on behalf of those affected.
If you have any outstanding PCNs please email them to me at lvpcchair@gmail.com and I will do my best to have them resolved with the help of LVWWC management.
Remember, always validate your stay, double check you have put in the correct vehicle registration, park within marked bays only and not on the grass, and take a screenshot or get an email confirmation when you register.
I’m sorry about the hassle this has created and hope that future events at Lee Valley won’t suffer the same problem.
Jonathan Males, LVPC

Update on High Performance Community and Access to World Class Programme Water

At Lee Valley, we are building more than just a training base — we are creating a high-performance community. Our aim is to give the next generation of athletes every chance to thrive while supporting those working to bridge the gap to senior international success.
Why This Matters
We know the challenge. Too many talented athletes fall away during their U23 years because the financial and logistical barriers become overwhelming. Training at Lee Valley is expensive, and gym access is not always easy to secure. Yet this is the very point in an athlete’s development where they need consistency, conditioning, as well as the sense of being part of something bigger.
That’s why Paddle UK are committing to providing free access to water sessions, gym facilities to boat storage to highly performing athletes. . This isn’t just about saving money — it’s about building an environment where athletes feel supported, motivated, and connected to a community that wants them to succeed. High Performance Community update

Cardiff P/1  online entires paid via Monzo Bank

Cardiff Entries – Please note that if you bank with Monzo these may show as going to a Cardiff bakery on your statement. Please do not report as fraud; it is the bank’s fault and nothing we can do!
To clarify – the payments are still going to the right place. It is just the banking app/statement that is misleading.

Welcome to our New Paddler Rep?

Davie Dickson is stepping into the committee’s Paddler Rep role(Thanks you for volunteering).  He will be well known to many in the sport having started participating in 80’s, returning later to support the sport in Scotland as well as introducing and supporting his son in the sport.

Important: Updated Participation Statement and Information on Membership Rquirements  (28 March 2026)

Clubs and slalom event organisers will be aware of the implementation on Paddle UK’s Standards for Events from 2027 (see Standards for Events).

The Slalom Committee is liaising with Paddle UK to support clubs and event organisers to be able to meet these incoming standards, and more information will be shared in the coming months.

However, want to share some important updated information regarding our Participation Statement and Membership Requirements Update.

Considerations for Introducing Young Paddlers to the Sport

Ensuring the safety of young people on the water requires careful attention to properly sized equipment, adherence to recognised safety standards, and exposure to environments and experiences that are appropriate for the participants age and development level. Safety is not a compromise; it is an essential part of their experience. Paddle UK Guidance

Water Quality Awareness

Cover cuts and abrasions, including blisters, with waterproof dressings Avoid swallowing river water and keep your water bottle clean and dry Check the weather. Poor water quality is more likely after heavy rain Check, clean, dry equipment to remove contamination and invasives species Always wash your hands before eating or drinking If you become sick, contact your GP with details of when and where you paddled Report pollution to the Environment Agency hotline 0800 807060

Paddle UK is receiving received an increasing in the number of incident reports submitted through the online incident reporting system in which paddlers have been ill and where the water quality was a possible cause. Whether you are paddling, organising paddling activities, running an event or supporting others during a challenge, it is important to consider what approaches we can take to minimise possible illness.

If you are organising a paddling activity, or running an event it is highly recommended that water quality is part of the risk assessment process, taking into account the activity, environment and those that could be at risk. Use the AI Risk Assessment Checker to support you in the development of your risk assessment.

Paddle UK has comprehensive advice and guidance which can be found here.

Slalom Evolution Proposals – Update

These proposals were adopted at the Slalom ACM on 29th November.  The new structure will come into effect for the 2027 season.

About the Proposals:
As you know proposals for the proposals for the future structure of canoe slalom racing in the UK were presented in April. Based on feedback received at the event and the subsequent consultation surveys, work has been ongoing to revise the proposal. The key principles of the revised proposals are:

  • Retain Divisions for Ranking, Results, Prizes and Promotion (this is the key change from the original proposal).
  • Allow paddlers to have full choice of where they race; simplify the calendar; and describe courses and venues using the proposed Tier System.
  • Provide compatible performance points across all Tiers as originally proposed.

Proposal details can be found here

We’d like to say a big thank you to the team of volunteers that have spent a lot of time pulling these documents and data illustrations together.
